May the 4th be with you

One of my favorite days on the eve of one of the saddest. I have loved Star Wars since I was a little kid, especially since I had a twin brother just like Princess (later General) Leia. Today brings memories of trading movie quotes back and forth with my brothers, dominating Star Wars trivia, and wishing I had my own Jedi robe and lightsaber (it would be indigo-colored).

But tomorrow brings memories of the day my best friend lost her dad and the world got a little bit darker without his optimism and wisdom.

So today, in honor of the holiday and DJ, I wrote poems that hold rebellion and community and hope. There’s one poem connected to each of the movies from the original trilogy. May the 4th/force be with you 🙏🏽

star wars: a new hope

“Every atom of oxygen in our lungs, of carbon in our muscles, of calcium in our bones, of iron in our blood – was created inside a star before Earth was born.” – ANHM

what do we do with the stars

in our bodies?

we walk around waging war

instead of making magic

but there’s a few of us,

in the undertones

and the back channels

whispering:

there’s a new hope

and it’s us

the empire strikes back

we’re in the midst

of an undoing

status quo quaking,

the power praying

to old gods

of conquest

control

and greed

time tested tactics

tried and true

grounded in fear

intended to ruin

all that we hold dear

let them strike back,

we’re unending –

a rebellion

an alliance

for the ages

return of the jedi

“But beware. Anger, fear, aggression. The dark side are they. Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny.” – Yoda

remembering

that all my feelings have a place

and a purpose

even rage

but once it has moved

through my body

in waves

crashing through

stuck thoughts,

limited beliefs,

and pain –

i come out the other side

as a
