Lifetime Work: NaPoWriMo Day 10

One cool aspect of participating in NaPoWriMo is seeing all the different forms and structures and styles that poetry can come in. Today I write from @beausia’s prompt on IG: LIFETIME WORK. It’s written in the form of Ooreio in which the title/top line is repeated before each pair of lines. I really like this form, which can also be written so that the title/top line is repeated after each pair of lines. More discovery to come in the days ahead I’m sure!

LIFETIME WORK

is the building of your body

layer by layer like a pearl

is the finding of your voice, peeling

layer by layer like an onion

is the rising revolution, changing

layer by layer of the system

is the accumulation of all that happens

layer by layer like sediment

is the softening, shifting

layer by layer like the clouds

LIFETIME WORK

invites the laying down of arms

and discovering change through love

sparks a dreaming beyond what is,

the now hasn’t caught up with our genius

lasts and lasts and lasts

there’s no getting off this train

ebbs and flows, responding to

the need of your heart’s moment

leaves a legacy, even if that legacy

is pain – don’t let it be pain

LIFETIME WORK

prepares you for what’s next

that deep and dark unknown

scares you in the best way

so you run, you leap to freedom

tattoos your skin with memories

that hold and haunt you both

feels more like living

than working from birth to death

is part of being human

and ends when it ends, in the end
